Matilda II Mk III (A12)
Bring one of Britain’s most recognisable infantry tanks to your collection with this detailed Matilda II Mk III (A12) 3D print. Designed for close support of advancing infantry, the Matilda combined exceptionally heavy armour for its period with a compact, purposeful silhouette. It is an ideal subject for British Expeditionary Force, North African Campaign and early World War II scenes.
Historical Role
The Matilda II entered service shortly before World War II and saw action in France, North Africa and other theatres. Its thick armour made it highly resistant to many early-war anti-tank weapons, while its 2-pounder gun was effective against contemporary armoured vehicles. Although slow by cruiser-tank standards, the Matilda was intended to move with infantry, break through defended positions and withstand hostile fire. In the Western Desert, it became particularly associated with British and Commonwealth operations against Axis forces.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is instantly identifiable by its compact hull, small rounded turret and extensive armoured side skirts covering much of the running gear. Other characteristic features include the narrow hull front, closely spaced suspension units, prominent track profile and centrally mounted 2-pounder gun. Together, these details give the Matilda a heavily protected, almost fortress-like appearance.
Variant Differences
The Mk III developed from earlier Matilda II versions by replacing the original twin AEC diesel installation with twin Leyland diesel engines. Its principal armament and infantry-tank role remained unchanged. For modellers, the distinction is represented mainly through appropriate engine-deck and exhaust-area details rather than a radically altered silhouette. The change supported continued production and operation using an alternative powerplant.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to desert dioramas, Battle of France scenes, model railways, wargaming displays and historically themed collections. It also makes an excellent painting project for collectors interested in British early-war armour, weathered desert finishes or European camouflage schemes.
Fun Fact
The Matilda II earned the unofficial nickname “Queen of the Desert” after its armour proved especially formidable during early British victories in North Africa.
