Nashorn – SPECIAL WEAPONS
Bring one of the Wehrmacht’s most recognisable heavy Panzerjäger vehicles to your collection with this detailed Nashorn model. Designed for long-range anti-armour engagements during the Second World War, its imposing gun, tall fighting compartment and distinctive open-topped layout create an unmistakable silhouette in any display or diorama.
Historical Role
The Nashorn served as a German heavy tank destroyer, using the powerful 8.8 cm Pak 43/1 gun to engage heavily armoured enemy vehicles at extended ranges. Its long-range firepower was its principal advantage, while its relatively light armour and open fighting compartment made careful positioning essential. Nashorn units were therefore best employed from concealed or prepared firing positions rather than in close-range assaults. This exceptional combination of a long 8.8 cm anti-tank gun and a mobile, open-topped platform is why the vehicle carries the SPECIAL WEAPONS badge.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is defined by its exceptionally long gun barrel, prominent muzzle brake and high-sided, open-topped fighting compartment. A tall, angular superstructure occupies the rear of the chassis, while the forward driving compartment and exposed upper fighting area give the Nashorn a functional, purposeful appearance. Its high profile and extended barrel make it instantly identifiable among German armoured fighting vehicles.
Modelling Uses
An excellent centrepiece for late-war Wehrmacht scenes, the Nashorn suits defensive positions, woodland ambushes, maintenance areas and long-range firing displays. It can be used in detailed dioramas, military model railways, historically themed wargaming displays or as a standalone piece for collectors. The broad selection of scales supports everything from compact layouts to highly detailed armour collections.
Fun Fact
The vehicle entered service under the name Hornisse, meaning “hornet”, before being renamed Nashorn, meaning “rhinoceros”. Both names are encountered in wartime references, but they describe the same formidable Panzerjäger design.
