Neubaufahrzeug – German Multi-Turret Prototype Tank
Recreate one of the Wehrmacht’s most unusual pre-war armoured experiments with this detailed Neubaufahrzeug model. Developed during the 1930s, this imposing German vehicle explored the multi-turret concept at a time when designers were still defining the battlefield role of heavily armed tanks. It carries our PROTOTYPE badge because it was an experimental design built in very small numbers before the Second World War.
Historical Role
The Neubaufahrzeug was conceived as a heavily armed breakthrough and infantry-support vehicle. Its combination of cannon and machine-gun positions was intended to engage fortifications, armoured targets and infantry from several directions. Although it never became a standard Panzer type, the project provided valuable experience for German armoured-vehicle development. A small number were later deployed during the early-war Norwegian campaign, where their size also gave them considerable propaganda value.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its large, slab-sided hull and prominent central turret carrying both 7.5 cm and 3.7 cm guns. Separate machine-gun turrets positioned toward the front and rear create the characteristic multi-turret silhouette. Long exposed track runs, numerous road wheels, angular armour plates and the elevated superstructure give the Neubaufahrzeug a complex, experimental appearance unlike later German Panzer designs.
Modelling Uses
An excellent subject for pre-war development scenes, early-war dioramas and Norwegian campaign displays. Smaller scales are well suited to model railways and compact wargaming displays, while larger versions offer a striking painting project with clearly defined armour panels, turret structures and running gear. Its unusual layout also makes it an appealing centrepiece for collectors of experimental German armour.
Fun Fact
The Neubaufahrzeug appeared prominently in German publicity material. Carefully arranged photographs helped create the impression that Germany possessed more of these heavy vehicles than had actually been constructed, making the tank’s visual impact greater than its limited production history.
