Ordnance QF 17-pounder
Bring one of Britain’s most formidable Second World War anti-tank guns to your collection with this detailed Blueprint to Print 3D model. The Ordnance QF 17-pounder combined a powerful 76.2 mm gun with a practical towed carriage, giving British and Commonwealth forces an effective answer to increasingly well-armoured German tanks.
Historical Role
Entering combat service in 1943, the 17-pounder was primarily employed as a towed anti-tank gun by Royal Artillery and divisional anti-tank units. Its high-velocity ammunition enabled it to engage heavily armoured vehicles, including the Panther and Tiger, at useful battlefield ranges. It served in North Africa, Italy and north-west Europe, where crews positioned it in concealed defensive locations, along likely armoured approaches or in support of advancing formations.
Distinctive Appearance
The gun is instantly recognisable by its exceptionally long, slender barrel, prominent muzzle brake and broad protective shield. Its low carriage, split trails, substantial wheels and compact crew position give it a purposeful silhouette. These features make the 17-pounder an unmistakable centrepiece in a gun line, roadside emplacement or prepared anti-tank position.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for Second World War dioramas, wargaming displays, military collections and historically themed model railways. Depict it being towed, deployed behind field fortifications, concealed beside a hedgerow or supported by ammunition crates and a gun crew. Larger scales provide a strong display piece for collectors, while smaller scales work particularly well alongside railway layouts, vehicle columns and battlefield scenes.
Fun Fact
The 17-pounder’s performance also led to its adaptation for armoured vehicles. Most famously, a modified version was installed in the Sherman Firefly, creating a British tank capable of confronting Germany’s heavier late-war armour more effectively.
