Ordnance QF 2-pounder

Recreate one of Britain’s most recognisable early Second World War anti-tank guns with this detailed 3D-printed Ordnance QF 2-pounder model. Designed for historically themed layouts, displays and collections, it captures the compact profile and distinctive carriage of a weapon widely associated with British and Commonwealth forces during the opening years of the conflict.

Historical Role

The Ordnance QF 2-pounder was Britain’s principal anti-tank gun at the beginning of World War II. It served with the British Expeditionary Force in France and saw extensive action in the Western Desert, where its high-velocity 40 mm ammunition was effective against many early-war armoured vehicles. As tank armour became heavier, the gun was increasingly superseded by the more powerful QF 6-pounder, although it continued to appear in secondary roles and on several armoured fighting vehicles.

Distinctive Appearance

The 2-pounder is immediately recognisable by its low silhouette, slender barrel and unusual three-legged firing platform. When deployed, the carriage provided all-round traverse, allowing the crew to engage threats from different directions without repositioning the entire weapon. Its compact gun shield, prominent wheels and angular support legs create an unmistakable outline that makes this artillery piece especially appealing in a prepared gun position.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for early-war British dioramas, North African battlefield scenes, model railways with military traffic, wargaming displays and specialist collectors. Position it beside a gun crew, ammunition boxes, a towing vehicle or a concealed emplacement to create a convincing anti-tank position. The broad choice of scales makes it suitable for railway layouts, tabletop forces and larger display models.

Fun Fact

The name “2-pounder” refers to the approximate weight of the gun’s projectile rather than the total weight of the weapon. This British naming convention was also used for several other artillery pieces, including the later 6-pounder and 17-pounder anti-tank guns.
