Ordnance QF 25-pounder

Bring one of Britain’s most celebrated Second World War artillery pieces to your collection with this detailed 3D-printed Ordnance QF 25-pounder. Combining the capabilities of a field gun and howitzer, the 25-pounder became the principal field artillery weapon of British and Commonwealth forces. This model is ideal as a standalone display piece or as part of a complete wartime gun position.

Historical Role

Introduced shortly before the Second World War, the 25-pounder provided British and Commonwealth formations with mobile, dependable artillery support. It primarily delivered indirect fire against enemy positions, troop concentrations and defensive works, but could also engage vehicles and other targets over open sights. The gun served in campaigns across North Africa, Europe and the Far East, typically operating with a limber and artillery tractor as part of a coordinated battery.

Distinctive Appearance

The 25-pounder is recognised by its compact barrel, protective gun shield, substantial wheels and characteristic box trail. Its circular firing platform allowed the crew to traverse the weapon rapidly through a wide arc once deployed. Many wartime examples also carried a prominent muzzle brake, adding to the gun’s purposeful silhouette. Ammunition boxes, crew figures, limbers and towing vehicles can be added to create a convincing operational scene.

Modelling Uses

This model is well suited to Second World War dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and military collections. Use it in a North African gun line, a European artillery position, a Far Eastern campaign setting or a transport scene behind a British artillery tractor. The range of scales supports everything from compact layouts to highly detailed centrepiece displays for collectors.

Fun Fact

The “25-pounder” name refers to the approximate weight of its standard high-explosive shell rather than the weight of the gun. Its firing platform helped crews rotate the weapon quickly, giving it exceptional flexibility for both indirect fire and direct engagement.
