Ordnance QF 6-pounder
Recreate one of Britain’s most important Second World War anti-tank guns with this detailed 3D-printed Ordnance QF 6-pounder model. Developed to replace the increasingly inadequate 2-pounder, this compact yet powerful artillery piece became a familiar sight with British and Commonwealth forces from 1942 onward.
Historical Role
The Ordnance Quick-Firing 6-pounder was a 57 mm anti-tank gun designed to engage enemy armour at practical battlefield ranges. It first saw action in the North African campaign and subsequently served in Italy, north-west Europe and other theatres. Usually operated by a dedicated gun crew, it could be concealed in defensive positions, deployed in ambushes or moved forward to support infantry against armoured threats. The design was also adopted by the United States as the 57 mm Gun M1.
Distinctive Appearance
The 6-pounder is recognised by its low profile, two-wheel carriage and widely spreading split trails, which provided stability when firing. Its angular protective shield, exposed breech area and long, slender barrel create a purposeful silhouette. These features make the gun immediately identifiable in a battery position, roadside emplacement or prepared anti-tank defence.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for Second World War dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of British military equipment. It can form the centrepiece of a concealed gun position, accompany infantry and towing vehicles, or add authentic detail to a North African, Italian or north-west European scene. The broad range of scales supports everything from compact railway layouts to larger display models.
Fun Fact
Later in the war, the 6-pounder could fire armour-piercing discarding sabot ammunition, giving this relatively compact weapon improved performance against heavily protected targets.
