Panther Ausf. G
Recreate one of the most recognisable German armoured fighting vehicles of the Second World War with this detailed Panther Ausf. G model. Introduced during 1944, the Ausf. G was the final major production version of the Panther and served with Wehrmacht armoured formations during the late-war campaigns on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.
Historical Role
The Panther combined a powerful 7.5 cm KwK 42 L/70 gun with sloped frontal armour and good cross-country mobility. It was primarily employed as a medium tank within Panzer units, engaging enemy armour at range while also supporting defensive operations and counter-attacks. Although mechanically demanding, its gun and frontal protection made it a formidable battlefield opponent.
Distinctive Appearance
The Ausf. G is defined by its broad, low turret, long high-velocity gun, sharply sloped glacis plate and large overlapping road wheels. Its redesigned hull sides, compact driver’s viewing arrangements and substantial rear engine deck distinguish it from earlier Panthers. Production changes mean details such as the gun mantlet, exhausts and equipment fittings could vary between vehicles.
Variant Differences
Developed from the preceding Panther Ausf. A, the Ausf. G retained the same principal armament and general powertrain but introduced a revised hull intended to simplify manufacture and improve protection. The driver’s direct-vision flap was removed, the side armour layout changed, and later vehicles could receive a mantlet with a distinctive lower “chin” designed to reduce dangerous shot deflection.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for late-war dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of German military vehicles. It can represent Panthers operating in Normandy, the Ardennes, Germany or on the Eastern Front, either as a factory-fresh vehicle or with realistic camouflage, weathering and battlefield wear.
Fun Fact
Despite carrying the designation Ausf. G, this version followed the Ausf. A in production; German Panther version lettering did not proceed in straightforward alphabetical order.
