Panzer II Ausf. D – RARE VARIANT

Recreate an unusual early-war German Panzer with this detailed model of the Panzer II Ausf. D. Designed as a faster member of the Panzer II family, the Ausf. D stands apart from the more familiar Ausf. C and F through its substantially different running gear and hull layout. Its distinctive configuration earns this model the RARE VARIANT badge and makes it an excellent addition to any specialised Wehrmacht vehicle collection.

Historical Role

The Panzer II Ausf. D was developed for Germany’s fast-moving Light Divisions, where speed and mobility were valued for reconnaissance, screening and support duties. It retained the Panzer II’s light armament of a 2 cm cannon and coaxial machine gun, suitable for engaging soft-skinned vehicles, light armour and infantry positions. As battlefield armour became heavier, vehicles of this type were increasingly better suited to reconnaissance and secondary roles.

Distinctive Appearance

The most recognisable feature is its suspension, with four large road wheels on each side rather than the five smaller road wheels associated with standard Panzer II Ausf. C and F vehicles. Combined with its revised hull profile, compact turret and early-war German Panzer proportions, this gives the Ausf. D an unmistakable silhouette.

Variant Differences

Developed from the broader Panzer II concept, the Ausf. D retained the established turret and armament but introduced a redesigned hull and torsion-bar suspension intended to provide greater speed for mobile formations. For modellers, the large road wheels and altered running gear are the clearest differences from the better-known Ausf. C and F.

Modelling Uses

Ideal for early-war dioramas, military model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, this model can represent a fast Panzer formation, a reconnaissance column, a maintenance scene or a comparative display of Panzer II variants.

Fun Fact

The specialised Ausf. D chassis later provided a useful basis for German conversions, including the Flammpanzer II, demonstrating how even an uncommon Panzer variant could continue in another battlefield role.
