Panzer II Ausf. F

Recreate one of the Wehrmacht’s best-known light tanks with this detailed Panzer II Ausf. F model. Introduced during World War II, the Ausf. F represented the final standard production version of the conventional Panzer II and combined its compact form with improved armour protection.

Historical Role

The Panzer II was originally intended as an interim vehicle while the larger Panzer III and Panzer IV entered service. Nevertheless, it became an important German tank during the early-war campaigns. By the arrival of the Ausf. F, its 2 cm cannon was increasingly ineffective against heavier enemy armour, so the vehicle was commonly employed for reconnaissance, screening, communications and infantry support on fronts including North Africa and the Eastern Front.

Distinctive Appearance

The Ausf. F has the characteristic compact silhouette of the Panzer II family, with a small offset turret, long engine deck and five individually sprung road wheels on each side. Its angular armour plates, prominent commander’s cupola, narrow tracks and 2 cm KwK 30 cannon create an unmistakable early-war German profile.

Variant Differences

Developed from the Panzer II Ausf. C, the Ausf. F retained the same basic mechanical arrangement, five-road-wheel leaf-spring suspension and armament of a 2 cm cannon with a coaxial MG 34. Its principal changes were increased armour protection and a redesigned hull front. These revisions gave the vehicle a more angular frontal appearance and were intended to improve survivability while preserving the Panzer II’s established light-tank design.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for North African, Eastern Front or training-ground dioramas, as well as model railways, historical wargaming displays and collectors of German armoured vehicles. The broad scale selection supports everything from compact scenic layouts to highly detailed display pieces.

Fun Fact

Although conceived as a temporary design, the Panzer II remained useful long after its frontline tank role had diminished. Its proven chassis also contributed to several later self-propelled gun and tank-destroyer designs.
