Panzer II Ausf. J
Add one of the most unusual Panzer II developments to your collection with this detailed Ausf. J model. Built as a heavily armoured reconnaissance tank, the vehicle combined the compact size of the Panzer II family with dramatically increased armour protection.
Historical Role
The Panzer II Ausf. J was developed for reconnaissance in conditions where stronger armour protection was considered essential. It retained the 2 cm KwK 38 autocannon and MG34 machine gun but carried much heavier armour than standard Panzer II versions. Only a small production run was completed, and examples later served on the Eastern Front.
Distinctive Appearance
The Ausf. J has a noticeably heavier, more compact silhouette than earlier Panzer IIs. Its thick armour, interleaved-style road wheel arrangement and low turret give it a distinctive appearance that sets it apart from the more familiar Ausf. A through F vehicles.
Variant Differences
Unlike the lighter standard Panzer II, the Ausf. J was designed around protection rather than speed. Its frontal armour was significantly increased, while the 2 cm main armament remained suitable mainly for reconnaissance and engaging lightly protected targets rather than enemy medium tanks.
Modelling Uses
This rare-looking vehicle is ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, unusual German armour collections, reconnaissance scenes or displays featuring lesser-known Panzer variants.
Fun Fact
Only a very small number of Panzer II Ausf. J vehicles were completed, making it one of the least common operational variants of the Panzer II family.
