Panzer III Ausf. E

Bring an important early-war German armoured vehicle to your collection with this detailed Panzer III Ausf. E resin model. Introduced shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War, the Ausf. E represented a major step towards the mature Panzer III design that became a familiar sight in Wehrmacht Panzer formations.

Historical Role

The Panzer III was developed as Germany’s principal tank-fighting medium tank, operating alongside the infantry-support Panzer IV. Armed initially with the 3.7 cm KwK 36, the Ausf. E served during the early campaigns of World War II, including operations in Poland and France. Its combination of mobility, radio coordination and a three-man turret supported the fast-moving combined-arms tactics associated with early German Panzer units.

Distinctive Appearance

The Ausf. E is recognisable by its compact, angular hull, centrally mounted turret and balanced six-road-wheel suspension on each side. The narrow early-war gun mantlet, prominent commander’s cupola, front transmission housing and sharply defined armour plates give it a distinctly early Panzer III silhouette. Track guards and external fittings add further visual interest for weathering and detail painting.

Variant Differences

Developed from the earlier Panzer III Ausführungen, the Ausf. E introduced a substantially redesigned chassis with torsion-bar suspension and six larger road wheels per side. This arrangement replaced the more experimental suspension layouts of previous versions and established the basic running-gear configuration retained by later Panzer IIIs. It was created to provide a more practical and standardised vehicle for series production.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for early-war dioramas, Wehrmacht workshop or convoy scenes, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of German armoured vehicles. It can be presented factory-fresh, campaign-worn or undergoing field maintenance, with the range of scales supporting everything from compact layouts to highly detailed centrepieces.

Fun Fact

The Ausf. E was the first Panzer III version to adopt the six-road-wheel torsion-bar layout that became one of the vehicle family’s most recognisable features.
