Panzer III Ausf. H
Recreate an important early-war German medium tank with this detailed Panzer III Ausf. H model. Introduced during the Second World War, the Ausf. H represents a key stage in the Panzer III’s development, combining improved armour protection with the more effective 5 cm main gun. Its compact, purposeful profile makes it an excellent addition to historically themed collections and displays.
Historical Role
The Panzer III was originally intended to engage enemy armoured vehicles, while the early Panzer IV provided heavier infantry support. The Ausf. H served with Wehrmacht Panzer formations during the early campaigns of the 1940s, operating as a mobile medium tank for armoured advances, defensive actions and combined-arms operations. Its three-man turret allowed the commander to concentrate on battlefield awareness rather than also serving as gunner or loader.
Distinctive Appearance
The Ausf. H is recognisable by its boxy hull, six-road-wheel suspension, commander’s cupola and centrally mounted turret armed with the short 5 cm KwK 38 L/42 gun. Bolted appliqué armour on the hull front and rear gave the vehicle a more layered appearance, while wider tracks and revised running-gear components contributed to its robust stance.
Variant Differences
Developed from earlier Panzer III versions, particularly the Ausf. G, the Ausf. H standardised the 5 cm gun and incorporated increased armour protection. Wider tracks, revised drive and suspension-related components helped manage the additional weight. For modellers, the most visible differences are the short 5 cm armament, bolted armour plates and broader track arrangement. These changes were introduced to improve battlefield protection and mobility while retaining the established Panzer III layout.
Modelling Uses
This model is suitable for World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors. It can represent a vehicle on a road march, in a Panzer assembly area, supporting infantry or advancing through an early-war European setting.
Fun Fact
The Panzer III’s three-man turret arrangement was a significant operational advantage, giving the commander a dedicated role and helping German crews coordinate effectively during fast-moving armoured actions.
