Panzer III Ausf. L
Recreate a later and more heavily protected development of the Panzer III with this detailed Ausf. L model. Suitable for World War II layouts, dioramas and collections, it represents the Panzer III as Germany continued to improve armour and firepower in response to tougher battlefield opposition.
Historical Role
The Panzer III Ausf. L entered service in 1942 and was fitted with the long 5 cm KwK 39 L/60 gun. It served primarily on the Eastern Front and in North Africa at a time when the Panzer III was increasingly challenged by heavier Allied and Soviet armour.
Distinctive Appearance
The Ausf. L retained the classic Panzer III layout with six road wheels per side, a centrally mounted turret and five-man crew arrangement. Its long 5 cm gun and added frontal armour give it a more powerful late-production appearance than earlier versions.
Variant Differences
Developed from the Ausf. J, the Ausf. L incorporated additional spaced frontal armour protection while retaining the long 5 cm main gun. During production, some external fittings and side vision features were simplified as the design continued to evolve.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for 1942–43 Eastern Front or North African displays, armoured columns, workshop scenes, rail transport settings and collections showing the evolution of German medium tanks.
Fun Fact
By the time the Ausf. L appeared, the Panzer III was nearing the limits of its development as a gun tank, but its chassis remained valuable for specialised armoured vehicles and assault-gun designs.
