Panzer III Ausf. M
The Panzer III Ausf. M represents one of the final gun-armed versions of Germany’s influential medium tank. Introduced during World War II as the Panzer III was approaching the limits of its development, it combined the established chassis with improved fording arrangements and the long-barrelled 5 cm KwK 39 L/60 gun. This detailed model captures the purposeful appearance of a late-production Wehrmacht Panzer III.
Historical Role
The Ausf. M served as a medium battle tank, supporting German armoured formations during 1943. Its 5 cm gun was effective against lighter armoured vehicles and field positions, although increasingly powerful Allied tanks reduced its effectiveness in the primary anti-tank role. Ausf. M vehicles operated principally on the Eastern Front and were also encountered in other Wehrmacht theatres of operation.
Distinctive Appearance
Recognisable features include the angular hull, centrally mounted three-man turret, commander’s cupola and long 5 cm gun barrel. The running gear retains the Panzer III’s characteristic six road wheels on each side. Deep-wading equipment, including the raised exhaust arrangement, helps distinguish the Ausf. M, while many vehicles also carried turret and hull Schürzen spaced armour for added protection against anti-tank rifles and shaped-charge weapons.
Variant Differences
Developed from the Panzer III Ausf. L, the Ausf. M retained the same basic powertrain and main armament but introduced improved watertight sealing and a modified exhaust system for deeper fording. These fittings are its clearest variant-specific modelling details. The changes were intended to improve tactical mobility across rivers and flooded ground while keeping the proven Panzer III design in service.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to Eastern Front dioramas, Wehrmacht armoured columns, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of German World War II vehicles. Smaller scales work particularly well for formations and railway scenes, while larger versions offer greater presence for painting, weathering and display.
Fun Fact
A number of Panzer III Ausf. M vehicles were converted into Flammpanzer III flame-throwing tanks, demonstrating how adaptable the mature Panzer III chassis remained even as its original battle-tank role declined.
