Panzer IV Ausf. D
Recreate an important early-war German armoured vehicle with this detailed Panzer IV Ausf. D model from Blueprint to Print 3D. Introduced shortly before the opening campaigns of the Second World War, the Ausf. D represents a recognisable stage in the development of the Panzerkampfwagen IV, combining its original infantry-support armament with several practical design improvements.
Historical Role
The Panzer IV was conceived as a support tank for Wehrmacht Panzer formations. Armed with the short-barrelled 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24, the Ausf. D was primarily intended to engage infantry positions, anti-tank guns, field fortifications and other battlefield obstacles with high-explosive ammunition. It served during the early campaigns in Poland, Western Europe, North Africa and the Soviet Union, operating alongside lighter Panzer III tanks and other vehicles within German armoured units.
Distinctive Appearance
The Ausf. D has the classic silhouette of an early Panzer IV: a box-like hull, centrally mounted turret, short 7.5 cm gun and eight small road wheels on each side. Its stepped front hull, bow machine-gun position, external gun mantlet, early-pattern commander’s cupola and compact turret create a notably different profile from later, longer-gunned Panzer IV versions.
Variant Differences
Developed from the preceding Panzer IV Ausf. C, the Ausf. D retained the same short-barrelled support gun but introduced a revised turret front with an external mantlet and restored the hull-mounted machine gun. These visible changes, together with continuing armour and production refinements, reflected efforts to improve protection and battlefield practicality without changing the vehicle’s established support role.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to early-war dioramas, model railways, historical wargaming displays and collectors of German armoured vehicles. It can form the centrepiece of a Panzer column, workshop scene, rail-loading display or combined-arms battlefield setting.
Fun Fact
Although later Panzer IV variants became famous for their long-barrelled anti-tank guns, the Ausf. D belonged to the original generation designed chiefly to provide close fire support for other tanks and infantry.
