Panzer IV Ausf. E
Recreate an important early-war German armoured vehicle with this detailed Panzer IV Ausf. E model from Blueprint to Print 3D. Combining the type’s characteristic short-barrelled main gun, angular turret and complex running gear, it is ideal for historically themed layouts, battlefield scenes and military collections.
Historical Role
The Panzer IV was originally intended to provide close support for German armoured formations while the Panzer III engaged enemy tanks. The Ausf. E retained the short-barrelled 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24 gun, which was particularly effective when firing high-explosive ammunition against infantry positions, field defences and anti-tank guns. It served with Wehrmacht units during campaigns in the Balkans, North Africa and the Soviet Union.
Distinctive Appearance
The Ausf. E is recognisable by its compact, angular turret, prominent commander’s cupola and short, thick-set gun barrel. Its box-like hull, revised driver’s visor and eight small road wheels on each side create the classic profile of an early Panzer IV. The short gun gives this version a noticeably different silhouette from later long-barrelled variants.
Variant Differences
Developed from the preceding Panzer IV Ausf. D, the Ausf. E retained broadly similar mechanical components and the same 7.5 cm short-barrelled armament. Its principal changes included increased armour protection, a revised driver’s visor and alterations to the turret and commander’s cupola arrangement. These refinements improved protection and practicality while preserving its established infantry-support role.
Modelling Uses
This model is well suited to World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors. It can represent an early-war Panzer unit, a dusty North African column, an Eastern Front formation or a vehicle undergoing maintenance behind the lines.
Fun Fact
The Panzer IV was originally the support partner to the Panzer III, yet its adaptable design allowed it to remain in German production throughout the Second World War and eventually assume the primary tank role.
