Panzer IV Ausf. F1

Recreate an important early-war Wehrmacht armoured vehicle with this detailed Panzer IV Ausf. F1 3D-printed model. Combining improved protection with the short-barrelled 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24 gun, the Ausf. F1 represents the Panzer IV before the long 75 mm anti-tank armament became standard.

Historical Role

The Panzer IV was originally conceived as a support tank, working alongside lighter German Panzer formations to engage infantry positions, anti-tank guns, field fortifications and other battlefield obstacles. Its low-velocity 75 mm gun was particularly suited to firing high-explosive shells. As increasingly well-armoured enemy tanks appeared, the Panzer IV’s role shifted towards tank fighting, leading to later long-gunned configurations.

Distinctive Appearance

The Ausf. F1 is immediately identifiable by its short, thick-set gun barrel projecting from the angular turret. Other characteristic features include the boxy hull, eight small road wheels on each side, paired bogies, return rollers and broad tracks. The compact armament gives the vehicle a noticeably different silhouette from later Panzer IV variants with extended high-velocity guns.

Variant Differences

Developed from the earlier Panzer IV Ausf. E within the same vehicle family, the Ausf. F incorporated strengthened armour and wider tracks while retaining the short 75 mm infantry-support weapon. The short barrel is its clearest modelling distinction from the later Ausf. F2, which introduced a long anti-tank gun. This infantry-support configuration is why the model carries the RARE VARIANT badge.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for early-war and transitional World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors. It is especially suitable for scenes illustrating the changing battlefield role of German armoured formations before long-gunned Panzer IV versions became standard.

Fun Fact

The designation “Ausf. F1” came into use to distinguish short-gunned vehicles from the long-gunned Ausf. F2; the short-gunned version had originally been known simply as the Ausf. F.
