Panzer IV Ausf. H

Historical Role
Entering production in 1943, the Panzer IV Ausf. H served as a principal German medium tank at a time when earlier Panzer designs were increasingly outmatched. Its 7.5 cm KwK 40 L/48 gun gave it an effective anti-armour capability while retaining useful high-explosive performance against infantry positions and field defences. The Ausf. H fought on both the Eastern and Western Fronts, supporting armoured formations alongside Panthers, assault guns and other Panzer IV variants.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is defined by its angular hull, centrally mounted turret, long gun barrel with muzzle brake and eight small road wheels on each side. Its most striking feature is the Schürzen armour: thin protective plates fitted around the hull sides and turret. These panels give the Ausf. H its unmistakable layered, late-war profile and provide excellent opportunities for weathering, battle damage and camouflage effects.
Variant Differences
Developed from the Panzer IV Ausf. G, the Ausf. H incorporated increased frontal protection and strengthened final-drive arrangements to cope with its greater weight. It retained the long 7.5 cm gun established on later Ausf. G vehicles, while factory-fitted hull and turret Schürzen became a prominent visual feature. These changes were intended to improve battlefield survivability without replacing the proven Panzer IV design.

An excellent choice for World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors. It is well suited to armoured columns, defensive positions, maintenance scenes and urban or Eastern Front settings.
Fun Fact
Panzer IV Schürzen are often associated with protection from shaped-charge weapons, but they were originally introduced primarily to help defeat Soviet anti-tank rifle fire aimed at the vehicle’s thinner side armour.
