Panzer IV C – Early Production

Recreate an important early stage in the development of Germany’s Panzerkampfwagen IV with this detailed Panzer IV Ausf. C model. Designed for World War II collections, layouts and displays, it captures the compact, purposeful appearance of the Wehrmacht’s early-war medium support tank. The EARLY PRODUCTION badge identifies this model as an early-war Panzer IV C production type.

Historical Role

The Panzer IV C was developed to provide close fire support for German Panzer formations. Its short-barrelled 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24 gun was suited to firing high-explosive and smoke ammunition against field positions, anti-tank guns and other obstacles. During the early campaigns, including Poland in 1939 and France in 1940, it operated alongside lighter Panzer types that initially formed the greater part of the Wehrmacht’s armoured strength.

Distinctive Appearance

The Ausf. C is recognisable by its short 7.5 cm gun, angular turret, early commander’s cupola and stepped superstructure. Eight small road wheels on each side, paired in leaf-sprung bogies, give the vehicle the characteristic running gear profile retained throughout Panzer IV development. Its compact turret and restrained early-war fittings distinguish it from later, more heavily armoured and long-gunned versions.

Variant Differences

Developed from the preceding Panzer IV Ausf. B, the Ausf. C retained the same basic chassis, five-man crew arrangement and short-barrelled main armament. It introduced incremental mechanical and production refinements rather than a major redesign, with revised turret details including improved protection around the coaxial machine gun. These changes helped mature the Panzer IV design for continued production and field service.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for early-war dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the Panzer IV C fits scenes depicting Panzer columns, maintenance areas, loading yards or campaign roads. Multiple scales allow it to serve as a centrepiece vehicle or as part of a larger formation.

Fun Fact

The Panzer IV became the only German tank design to remain in continuous production throughout the Second World War, evolving far beyond the early Ausf. C configuration.
