Panzer IV D Destroyed
Recreate the aftermath of an early Second World War armoured engagement with this battle-damaged Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. D. Designed as a display variant rather than an intact parade-ground vehicle, the model captures the battered character of a disabled Wehrmacht tank. Its UNIQUE DESIGN badge recognises the specially modelled destruction and damage that distinguish it from the standard Panzer IV D.
Historical Role
The Panzer IV Ausf. D was an early-war German medium tank used during the campaigns of 1940 and the opening stages of the Eastern Front. Armed with the short-barrelled 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24, it was intended primarily to provide close support with effective high-explosive fire against infantry positions, anti-tank guns and field fortifications. It served alongside Panzer III formations, with each vehicle fulfilling a complementary battlefield role.
Distinctive Appearance
The Ausf. D is recognisable by its compact early-war turret, short 7.5 cm gun, external gun mantlet, prominent commander’s cupola and angular hull. The stepped front plate and bow machine-gun mounting further identify this version. On this destroyed interpretation, battle damage disrupts the otherwise orderly silhouette, creating a convincing abandoned or knocked-out vehicle for narrative displays.
Variant Differences
Developed from the preceding Panzer IV Ausf. C, the Ausf. D retained the same short 7.5 cm support armament and broadly similar automotive layout. Its principal changes included revised armour protection, a reworked hull front with a ball-mounted machine gun and an external gun mantlet. These visible updates reflected continuing improvements to the Panzer IV while preserving its original close-support purpose.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for early-war dioramas, damaged-vehicle scenes, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors seeking a more atmospheric alternative to an intact tank. It can form the centrepiece of a roadside wreck, recovery scene, abandoned position or battlefield aftermath.
Fun Fact
Although conceived as a support tank, the Panzer IV’s adaptable design allowed later versions to receive longer, more powerful guns and remain an important German armoured vehicle throughout the war.
