Panzer IV F2

The Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. F2 marked an important stage in the development of Germany’s principal medium tank. Introduced during the Second World War, it combined the established Panzer IV chassis with a longer, more powerful 7.5 cm gun. This detailed model carries the EARLY PRODUCTION badge because it represents an early long-gun Panzer IV production variant.

Historical Role

Earlier Panzer IV versions were primarily intended to provide close support with a short-barrelled gun. The F2’s long 7.5 cm KwK 40 L/43 gave Wehrmacht armoured units a substantially improved ability to engage enemy tanks at useful battlefield ranges. It served as both a capable medium tank and a mobile anti-armour asset during the changing conditions of the Eastern Front and other theatres.

Distinctive Appearance

The F2 retained the Panzer IV’s angular hull, centrally mounted turret, eight small road wheels on each side and prominent track arrangement. Its defining visual feature is the long gun barrel projecting well beyond the hull, creating a notably different silhouette from short-gunned Panzer IV variants. The squared superstructure, commander’s cupola, turret stowage details and balanced running gear make it instantly recognisable in a German armoured formation.

Variant Differences

Developed from the Panzer IV Ausf. F, commonly distinguished retrospectively as the short-gunned F1, the F2 replaced the 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24 with the longer KwK 40 L/43. The most obvious modelling difference is the extended barrel and associated muzzle-brake arrangement. This variant existed to improve the Panzer IV’s effectiveness against increasingly well-armoured enemy vehicles.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, historical wargaming displays and collectors of Wehrmacht armour. It can form the centrepiece of an armoured column, roadside maintenance scene, defensive position or combined-arms display.

Fun Fact

The F2 designation was used only briefly; vehicles of this long-gun development were subsequently incorporated into the Panzer IV Ausf. G designation, making “F2” a particularly recognisable name among armour enthusiasts.
