Panzer IV H with Zimmerit

Recreate one of the Wehrmacht’s most recognisable late-war medium tanks with this detailed Panzer IV Ausf. H model. Featuring a textured Zimmerit coating, long-barrelled main gun and characteristic protective side skirts, it captures the purposeful appearance of a German armoured vehicle operating during the later stages of World War II.

Historical Role

The Panzer IV Ausf. H served as a principal German medium tank from 1943, performing both armoured combat and infantry-support duties. Armed with the 7.5 cm KwK 40 L/48, it could engage many contemporary enemy tanks while retaining a useful high-explosive capability against field positions and infantry. It saw service on the Eastern Front, in Italy and in Western Europe.

Distinctive Appearance

This configuration is distinguished by its ridged Zimmerit anti-magnetic mine coating across the exposed vertical surfaces of the hull and turret. Its box-like superstructure, centrally mounted turret, long gun barrel, commander’s cupola and Schürzen side armour create an unmistakable silhouette. The supplied FIELD MODIFICATION badge identifies this specifically modelled Zimmerit-coated Panzer IV H configuration.

Variant Differences

Developed from the Panzer IV Ausf. G, the Ausf. H retained the effective long-barrelled 7.5 cm gun while standardising heavier frontal protection and incorporating production and running-gear revisions. Visually, the H is especially associated with turret and hull Schürzen, revised detail fittings and, on vehicles produced during the appropriate period, Zimmerit. These changes improved battlefield protection while keeping the established Panzer IV design in front-line service.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for late-war dioramas, military scenes on model railways, wargaming displays and specialist collectors. The range of scales allows the vehicle to serve as a compact background element, a gaming piece or a prominent display model.

Fun Fact

Zimmerit was developed to prevent magnetic anti-tank charges from adhering to armour. Although Germany’s opponents made little use of such weapons, its deeply patterned texture became one of the defining visual features of many German armoured vehicles produced between 1943 and 1944.
