Panzer IV/70(A) – RARE VARIANT
Bring a distinctive late-war German Panzerjäger to your collection with this detailed Panzer IV/70(A) resin model. Combining the proven Panzer IV chassis with the long 7.5 cm Pak 42 L/70 gun, the vehicle was designed to engage enemy armour from concealed defensive positions. Its unusual Alkett-built configuration makes it an especially interesting subject for Wehrmacht vehicle collections.
Historical Role
Introduced during the final phase of World War II, the Panzer IV/70(A) served as a heavily armed tank destroyer. Its powerful, long-barrelled gun was suited to engaging armoured targets at range, while its enclosed superstructure provided protection for the crew. The vehicle’s comparatively high silhouette made careful positioning, camouflage and prepared firing positions particularly important.
Distinctive Appearance
The Panzer IV/70(A) is immediately recognisable by its long gun, low Panzer IV running gear and tall, angular fighting compartment. The elevated superstructure gives it a noticeably different profile from the sleeker Panzer IV/70(V), creating a characteristic stepped and top-heavy appearance that stands out among late-war German armoured vehicles.
Variant Differences
Developed from the Panzer IV chassis, the Panzer IV/70(A) paired standard Panzer IV automotive components with an Alkett-designed fixed superstructure and the 7.5 cm Pak 42 L/70. Compared with the better-known Vomag-built Panzer IV/70(V), its most visible difference is the substantially higher superstructure. The design existed as an alternative means of increasing production of vehicles armed with the long L/70 gun.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for late-war dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, this model suits defensive positions, ruined urban scenes, transport layouts and workshop settings. Its unusual silhouette also makes it an effective centrepiece alongside other Panzer IV-based vehicles.
Fun Fact
The “A” designation refers to Alkett, the German manufacturer responsible for this version. This model receives the RARE VARIANT badge specifically because it represents the Alkett-built Panzer IV/70 with its higher superstructure, rather than the lower Vomag-built Panzer IV/70(V).
