Panzerjäger 38(t) für 7.62 cm Pak 36(r)
This detailed model represents an early German Marder III configuration created by mounting a converted captured Soviet 7.62 cm gun on the proven Panzer 38(t) chassis. Combining an unmistakable open fighting compartment with a powerful anti-tank weapon, it offers a distinctive addition to any World War II Wehrmacht vehicle collection.
Historical Role
Developed as a mobile Panzerjäger, the vehicle gave German anti-tank units greater firepower and mobility than towed guns alone. Its 7.62 cm Pak 36(r) was based on the captured Soviet F-22 field gun and modified for German service. Mounted on an available Panzer 38(t) chassis, it helped address the need for a weapon capable of engaging increasingly well-armoured enemy tanks, particularly on the Eastern Front.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its tall, open-topped fighting compartment, prominent angular gun shield and long 7.62 cm barrel. The compact tracked chassis contrasts sharply with the elevated weapon mounting, exposed crew position and lightly protected superstructure, giving this early Marder III arrangement a purposeful, improvised silhouette.
Variant Differences
Developed from the turreted Panzer 38(t) tank, this Panzerjäger replaced the original turret and tank armament with a fixed open fighting compartment carrying the converted 7.62 cm Pak 36(r). Its raised gun position, large shield and open rear area are the principal visible differences. This configuration existed to place a more effective anti-tank gun on a mobile, readily available chassis.
RARE VARIANT
This model receives the RARE VARIANT badge because it depicts the early Marder III configuration armed with a converted captured Soviet 7.62 cm gun, rather than the later and more familiar arrangements using German 7.5 cm armament.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for Eastern Front dioramas, military model railways, wargaming displays and specialist collectors. It suits workshop, resupply, defensive-position and mobile anti-tank scenes, while its unusual silhouette provides a strong focal point among German armoured vehicles.
Fun Fact
The “(r)” in Pak 36(r) identified the gun’s Russian origin, reflecting the Wehrmacht practice of adapting captured equipment for German service.
