Panzerjäger I – UNIQUE DESIGN

Bring an important early-war German tank destroyer to your collection with this detailed Panzerjäger I model. Developed as a practical conversion of an existing light tank chassis, it combined the Panzer I with a captured 4.7 cm anti-tank gun. This distinctive solution earns the model its UNIQUE DESIGN badge and reflects the Wehrmacht’s efforts to provide mobile anti-tank firepower during the opening years of World War II.

Historical Role

The Panzerjäger I served as a self-propelled anti-tank vehicle, allowing German anti-tank units to move their gun more readily than conventional towed crews. Its 4.7 cm weapon offered greater anti-armour capability than the machine-gun armament of the original Panzer I, while the tracked chassis enabled it to accompany mobile formations. The open fighting compartment provided limited protection, making careful positioning and supporting fire essential.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its tall, angular gun shield, exposed upper fighting compartment and prominent forward-facing 4.7 cm gun. The compact Panzer I running gear remains clearly visible beneath the enlarged superstructure, creating a characteristic contrast between the small chassis and comparatively substantial armament.

Variant Differences

The Panzerjäger I was developed from the Panzerkampfwagen I Ausf. B. Its original machine-gun turret was removed and replaced by a fixed, open-topped fighting compartment carrying the captured Czech 4.7 cm anti-tank gun. The raised shield, exposed crew position and long gun barrel are the principal visible differences. The conversion existed to give an otherwise lightly armed chassis a useful mobile anti-tank role.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for early-war Wehrmacht dioramas, military scenes on model railways, wargaming displays and specialist collectors. It can be presented in a column, defensive position, workshop scene or alongside infantry and support vehicles.

Fun Fact

The “(t)” used in the German weapon designation indicated Czech origin, highlighting how captured equipment was incorporated into Wehrmacht service.
