PT 109

Bring an iconic United States Navy patrol torpedo boat to your collection with this detailed PT 109 model. An 80-foot Elco design, PT-109 served in the Pacific during World War II and became one of the conflict’s best-known small combat craft. Its compact profile and historically significant story make it an excellent subject for naval collections and Pacific theatre scenes.

Historical Role

PT boats were fast, lightly built vessels intended for night patrols, torpedo attacks, reconnaissance and the disruption of enemy coastal shipping. Operating from forward bases, PT-109 served in the Solomon Islands campaign under Lieutenant John F. Kennedy. During a patrol on 2 August 1943, it was struck and cut in two by the Japanese destroyer Amagiri. Kennedy and the surviving crew reached nearby islands, where they were later rescued.

Distinctive Appearance

PT-109 is defined by its long, low wooden hull, sharp bow and compact central deckhouse. Four torpedo tubes dominate the sides, while twin .50-calibre machine-gun mounts, the stern-mounted 20 mm cannon and open bridge create a purposeful silhouette. For its final mission, a 37 mm anti-tank gun was secured to the foredeck, adding a particularly distinctive modelling feature.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for Solomon Islands dioramas, coastal model railways, World War II wargaming displays and specialist collectors. Smaller scales suit harbour scenes or larger naval layouts, while larger versions provide greater scope for painting deck fittings, weapons, crew areas and realistic weathering.

Fun Fact

After the sinking, Kennedy carved a rescue message into a coconut shell. The message helped local islanders coordinate assistance, and the preserved coconut later became a famous personal keepsake displayed during his presidency.
