QF 25pdr Mk.I

Representing Britain’s transitional 18/25-pounder field gun, this detailed model captures the first Mark of the famous QF 25-pounder family. Introduced before the Second World War, the Mk.I combined proven First World War-era equipment with a more powerful artillery calibre, making it an important link between the QF 18-pounder and the later standard 25-pounder.

Historical Role

The QF 25pdr Mk.I served as a British field artillery piece during the opening years of World War II. Operated by Royal Artillery batteries, it delivered high-explosive fire against infantry positions, defensive works and battlefield targets. Its mobility allowed gun detachments to reposition as operations developed, while direct fire could be used against visible threats when necessary. The type saw early-war service before being progressively replaced by the more familiar Mk.II.

Distinctive Appearance

The Mk.I retained the recognisable proportions of the earlier 18-pounder carriage, including its box trail, spoked wheels and protective gun shield. Its comparatively slender carriage and lack of the later 25-pounder’s circular firing platform give it a distinctive early-war profile. The combination of an older carriage design with a larger-calibre barrel makes this artillery piece especially interesting in a display.

Variant Differences

Often called the 18/25-pounder, the Mk.I was developed by converting QF 18-pounder guns to fire 25-pound ammunition while retaining a modified 18-pounder carriage. Unlike the purpose-designed Mk.II, it did not use the characteristic circular firing platform and had more limited traverse. The conversion provided improved artillery capability while Britain introduced sufficient numbers of the newer weapon.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for British early-war dioramas, model railways, historical wargaming displays and collectors of Royal Artillery equipment. It can be displayed in a firing position, on the move with a suitable tractor and limber, or as part of a gun battery scene.

Fun Fact

Although officially the 25-pounder Mk.I, its origins led to the enduring nickname “18/25-pounder,” neatly summarising its combination of 25-pounder firepower and 18-pounder heritage.
