QF 4.5-inch AA Gun

Bring a formidable element of Britain’s wartime air defence network to your collection with this detailed model of the QF 4.5-inch anti-aircraft gun. Developed as a heavy weapon for engaging high-altitude aircraft, this imposing artillery piece makes an impressive centrepiece for World War II scenes, gun batteries and military displays.

Historical Role

The QF 4.5-inch AA Gun served as part of Britain’s heavy anti-aircraft defences during the Second World War. Primarily installed at permanent or semi-permanent sites, it helped protect strategically important locations such as London, naval bases, ports and industrial areas from enemy bombers. Crews used fire-control predictors, rangefinding equipment and, increasingly, radar information to direct time-fuzed shells towards fast-moving aircraft at altitude. Its size and weight made it less mobile than the widely used QF 3.7-inch gun, so it was particularly suited to prepared defensive positions.

Distinctive Appearance

The gun is instantly recognisable by its long, substantial barrel, large breech assembly and high-angle mounting. Its broad platform and heavy structural components reflect the forces involved in firing a large-calibre anti-aircraft shell. When displayed in an elevated firing position, the model captures the dramatic silhouette of a British heavy anti-aircraft battery ready to engage an incoming raid.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for dioramas depicting the Blitz, coastal installations, industrial defences or prepared anti-aircraft sites. Smaller scales suit model railways and expansive wargaming displays, while larger versions provide greater presence and detail for collectors, artillery enthusiasts and standalone display pieces. It can be paired with British gun crews, ammunition, searchlights, radar equipment, command posts and defensive earthworks.

Fun Fact

Heavy anti-aircraft batteries were part of an increasingly sophisticated integrated defence system: observers, sound locators, searchlights, predictors and radar could all contribute information before the gun crews opened fire.
