Scharnhorst 1-400
Bring a celebrated German capital ship to your maritime collection with this detailed model of Scharnhorst. Designed for World War II naval scenes, harbour layouts and historical displays, the model captures the powerful profile of one of the Kriegsmarine’s best-known warships.
Historical Role
Scharnhorst entered Kriegsmarine service shortly before the Second World War and operated as a fast capital ship alongside her sister ship, Gneisenau. Armed primarily with nine 28 cm guns in three triple turrets, she was intended for surface warfare, commerce raiding and attacks against enemy naval forces. Her wartime service included operations in the North Atlantic, the Norwegian campaign and Arctic waters. Scharnhorst was sunk during the Battle of the North Cape on 26 December 1943 after engaging British forces while attempting to intercept an Arctic convoy.
Distinctive Appearance
The ship is instantly recognisable by her long, low hull, sharp Atlantic bow and three prominent main gun turrets, with two positioned forward and one aft. Her layered bridge structure, single large funnel, heavy secondary armament and military mast arrangement create the purposeful silhouette associated with late-1930s German warship design. These features make Scharnhorst an imposing centrepiece even in smaller-scale scenes.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for naval dioramas, dockyard and harbour scenes, this model can be displayed under way, alongside a quay or as part of a wartime fleet setting. It also provides a striking maritime feature for model railways, an identification piece for wargaming displays and a historically significant subject for collectors of Kriegsmarine and World War II naval models.
Fun Fact
In February 1942, Scharnhorst, Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen completed the daring “Channel Dash,” sailing from Brest through the English Channel to German waters despite British attempts to stop them.
