Sd.Kfz. 250/9 – RARE VARIANT
The Sd.Kfz. 250/9 was a specialised German reconnaissance half-track developed from the compact Sd.Kfz. 250 family. Combining armoured mobility with a turret-mounted 2 cm cannon, it gave Wehrmacht reconnaissance units greater firepower while retaining the cross-country performance needed for scouting and screening operations during World War II.
Historical Role
Known as the leichter Schützenpanzerwagen (2 cm), the Sd.Kfz. 250/9 served with Panzeraufklärungs units. Its role included route reconnaissance, protecting advancing columns, maintaining contact with enemy forces and supporting other reconnaissance vehicles. The half-track chassis allowed it to travel across terrain that could restrict conventional wheeled armoured cars.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its short, compact armoured hull, front steering wheels and tracked rear running gear with overlapping road wheels. Above the fighting compartment sits a low, open-topped turret carrying the 2 cm weapon and a coaxial machine gun. Its angular armour plates, prominent turret frame and hybrid wheeled-and-tracked profile create a distinctive silhouette.
Variant Differences
The Sd.Kfz. 250/9 developed from the Sd.Kfz. 250 light armoured half-track. It retained the base vehicle’s chassis and running gear, but its troop-carrying compartment was adapted to mount a rotating turret with a 2 cm cannon and machine gun. The turret is the clearest modelling difference and reflects the variant’s purpose as a more heavily armed reconnaissance vehicle rather than a personnel carrier. This specialised reconnaissance configuration is why the model carries the RARE VARIANT badge.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for World War II dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the Sd.Kfz. 250/9 works especially well in reconnaissance columns, command groups, road scenes and Eastern or Western Front settings. Multiple scale choices make it suitable for both compact layouts and highly detailed display projects.
Fun Fact
The Sd.Kfz. 250/9 helped transfer the familiar 2 cm reconnaissance armament concept from wheeled armoured cars to a half-track platform, improving mobility over difficult ground.
