Sd.Kfz. 7-1 Flakvierling 38
Bring a distinctive German self-propelled anti-aircraft vehicle to your collection with the Sd.Kfz. 7-1 Flakvierling 38. Combining the mobility of a Wehrmacht half-track with concentrated light anti-aircraft firepower, this detailed 3D-printed model captures an unusual battlefield conversion from the Second World War. It carries the RARE VARIANT badge because it represents the self-propelled anti-aircraft version of the better-known Sd.Kfz. 7 family.
Historical Role
The Sd.Kfz. 7/1 was developed to provide mobile air defence for German formations operating close to the front. Its 2 cm Flakvierling 38 combined four autocannons on a single mounting, enabling it to engage low-flying aircraft with a high volume of fire. Like other light Flak weapons, it could also be employed against exposed troops, soft-skinned vehicles and lightly protected ground targets when required.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its half-track running gear, large quadruple Flak mounting and open rear fighting platform. Folding mesh-sided panels surrounded the weapon deck, creating a broader working area when lowered while retaining a compact travelling profile when raised. The exposed gun position, crew platform and prominent four-barrel arrangement give the model a striking silhouette.
Variant Differences
Developed from the Sd.Kfz. 7 medium artillery tractor, the Sd.Kfz. 7/1 retained the base vehicle’s half-track chassis and running gear but replaced the normal rear seating and towing body with a purpose-built anti-aircraft fighting platform. Its principal change was the installation of the 2 cm Flakvierling 38, supported by altered bodywork, folding platform sides and ammunition stowage. These modifications allowed the established tractor chassis to serve as mobile Flak protection.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for Luftwaffe or Wehrmacht air-defence scenes, this model suits wartime dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and specialist vehicle collectors. It can be posed protecting a convoy, railway installation, supply column or field headquarters.
Fun Fact
The name “Flakvierling” refers to the mounting’s four-gun arrangement, one of the vehicle’s most visually memorable features.
