StuG III Ausf. G

Recreate one of the most recognisable German armoured fighting vehicles of World War II with this detailed StuG III Ausf. G model. Built on the proven Panzer III chassis, the Sturmgeschütz III combined a low silhouette, effective frontal protection and powerful armament in a compact, turretless design.

Historical Role

Originally conceived as an assault gun for supporting Wehrmacht infantry, the StuG III was operated primarily by the Sturmartillerie. By the time the Ausf. G entered service, the vehicle was increasingly employed in the anti-tank role. Its 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 gun made it an effective defensive weapon against enemy armour, while its low profile allowed crews to use concealment and prepared firing positions to advantage.

Distinctive Appearance

The Ausf. G is distinguished by its low, angular superstructure, fixed forward-firing gun and Panzer III running gear. Recognisable details include the commander’s cupola, broad casemate roof and compact fighting compartment. Many vehicles also carried Schürzen side skirts, while production changes introduced different gun mantlets, including the rounded cast type commonly known as the Saukopfblende.

Variant Differences

The Ausf. G developed from earlier StuG III versions and became the final major production variant. It retained the long 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 used on the preceding Ausf. F/8 but introduced a redesigned, widened superstructure with a commander’s cupola and revised fighting-compartment details. These changes improved crew arrangements and helped standardise the StuG III for large-scale production and increasingly important anti-tank duties.

Modelling Uses

Ideal for late-war dioramas, military model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, this model can represent infantry support, defensive positions, armoured columns or workshop scenes. The range of scales makes it suitable for both compact layouts and highly detailed display projects.

Fun Fact

The StuG III family became one of Germany’s most numerous fully tracked armoured fighting vehicle types, reflecting the practical value of its comparatively low-cost, turretless design.
