StuG III Ausf. G
Bring one of Germany’s most recognisable late-war armoured fighting vehicles to your collection with this detailed StuG III Ausf. G model. Combining a low silhouette with a powerful long-barrelled gun, the Sturmgeschütz III became a familiar sight across the European battlefields of the Second World War.
Historical Role
Originally conceived as an infantry-support assault gun, the StuG III was operated primarily by the Wehrmacht’s artillery arm. By the time the Ausf. G entered service, its 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 gun also made it an effective Panzerjäger. It supported infantry, engaged fortified positions and countered enemy armour from concealed or prepared firing positions. Its low profile made it particularly well suited to ambushes and defensive operations.
Distinctive Appearance
The StuG III Ausf. G is defined by its low, turretless superstructure, sharply angled frontal armour and long gun barrel. Characteristic details include the commander’s cupola, roof-mounted machine-gun position and compact fighting compartment built upon the Panzer III chassis. Many later vehicles carried Schürzen side-armour plates and the rounded Saukopf gun mantlet, although fittings varied with production period and field modifications.
Variant Differences
The Ausf. G developed from earlier StuG III versions and became the definitive production variant. Compared with the Ausf. F and F/8, it featured a redesigned and widened superstructure, an improved commander’s position and revised roof arrangements while retaining the long 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48. These changes improved crew accommodation, observation and production practicality while maintaining its assault-gun and anti-armour roles.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for late-war dioramas, military model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the StuG III Ausf. G suits urban ruins, defensive positions, woodland ambushes and Eastern or Western Front scenes.
Fun Fact
Although commonly associated with German tank warfare, StuG crews were originally part of the artillery branch rather than the Panzertruppe, reflecting the vehicle’s initial infantry-support mission.
