StuG III Remote Variant

This detailed 3D-printed model represents the late-war German Sturmgeschütz III fitted with a remotely operated roof-mounted machine gun. Combining the StuG III’s characteristic low profile with a distinctive close-defence weapon installation, it is an excellent choice for Second World War collections, battlefield scenes and German armoured formations.

Historical Role

Originally developed as an infantry-support assault gun, the StuG III evolved into one of the Wehrmacht’s most important armoured fighting vehicles. Later versions were armed with the long 7.5 cm StuK 40 gun and were widely employed against enemy armour, fortified positions and field defences. Their low silhouette made them effective in concealed firing positions, while their turretless construction allowed valuable firepower to be carried on the proven Panzer III chassis.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle is defined by its compact casemate, sharply sloped superstructure and long gun projecting from the front mantlet. The remote-control variant adds a prominent machine-gun mounting on the superstructure roof, allowing the weapon to be aimed and fired from within the fighting compartment. Late-war fittings such as the commander’s cupola, roof hatches and optional side Schürzen give the StuG III its unmistakable operational appearance.

Variant Differences

This configuration developed from the late-production StuG III Ausf. G. Its drivetrain and main gun remained fundamentally unchanged, but the conventional exposed roof machine-gun position was replaced by a remotely operated Rundumfeuer machine-gun mount. The raised weapon and its associated roof fittings are the clearest modelling differences. The system was introduced to provide close defence while reducing the crew member’s exposure to small-arms fire.

Modelling Uses

Ideal for dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, this model suits late-war defensive positions, urban scenes, repair areas and armoured columns. The broad choice of scales supports everything from compact railway layouts to highly detailed display centrepieces.

Fun Fact

Although the roof weapon could be operated from inside the vehicle, a crew member still had to leave the protected fighting compartment to reload it.
