StuG IV 1-56

Recreate one of the Wehrmacht’s distinctive late-war armoured fighting vehicles with this detailed StuG IV 3D-printed model. Combining the proven Panzer IV chassis with a low, fixed fighting compartment, the Sturmgeschütz IV offers a characterful subject for World War II collections, battlefield scenes and historically themed displays.

Historical Role

Introduced in late 1943, the StuG IV served as an assault gun and increasingly as a tank destroyer as German forces faced growing numbers of enemy armour. Its long 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 gun was effective against fortified positions and many contemporary tanks. Vehicles were issued primarily to assault-gun units, where their low profile made them well suited to ambushes, defensive fighting and direct infantry support.

Distinctive Appearance

The StuG IV is recognised by its low, angular casemate, long gun barrel and Panzer IV running gear with eight small road wheels on each side. Particularly distinctive is the projecting driver’s position on the front-left of the hull. The combination of a compact superstructure, broad tracks, sharply sloped armour plates and minimal turret-like height gives the vehicle its purposeful late-war silhouette.

Variant Differences

The StuG IV adapted the superstructure and main armament concept of the better-known StuG III to the longer Panzer IV chassis. Its Panzer IV suspension and projecting driver’s compartment are the clearest visual differences, while the fixed casemate retained the low profile and limited gun traverse typical of German Sturmgeschütz designs. The vehicle was introduced to supplement assault-gun production following disruption to StuG III manufacturing.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for late-war dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of German military vehicles. It can represent a concealed defensive position, a vehicle supporting infantry, a roadside column or a weathered machine operating on the Eastern or Western Front.

Fun Fact

Although built on the Panzer IV chassis, the StuG IV was not simply a turretless Panzer IV; its design deliberately combined that chassis with the established fighting-compartment layout of the StuG III.
