StuG IV Late
Bring a formidable late-war German assault gun to your collection with the StuG IV Late. Combining the proven Panzer IV chassis with a low, fixed fighting compartment, this detailed 3D-printed model captures the purposeful profile of a vehicle built for direct fire support and anti-tank engagements during the final years of the Second World War.
Historical Role
The Wehrmacht employed the Sturmgeschütz IV as both an assault gun and tank destroyer. Its 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 gun could engage fortified positions, field defences and enemy armour. Introduced in late 1943, the StuG IV helped sustain German assault-gun production and served with Sturmartillerie and anti-tank formations on both the Eastern and Western Fronts.
Distinctive Appearance
The StuG IV is recognisable by its low casemate, long gun barrel and Panzer IV running gear. Particularly distinctive is the projecting armoured driver’s position on the left side of the hull. Late-production vehicles displayed practical wartime features and simplified fittings, while side Schürzen armour plates or their mounting rails could add to the characteristic layered silhouette.
Variant Differences
The StuG IV combined the chassis and automotive components of the Panzer IV with a fighting compartment derived from the StuG III. In place of the Panzer IV’s rotating turret, it used a fixed, lower casemate mounting the StuK 40 gun, creating a smaller frontal profile but limiting traverse. The adapted superstructure, offset driver’s compartment and assault-gun layout are the principal visible differences. The design was introduced to maintain assault-gun output after disruption to StuG III production.
Modelling Uses
Suitable for late-war dioramas, military model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the StuG IV Late works well in defensive positions, armoured columns, ruined urban scenes or workshop settings. Multiple scales allow it to complement compact railway layouts, tabletop forces and larger display models.
Fun Fact
Although it resembled an enlarged StuG III, the StuG IV retained the Panzer IV’s distinctive eight-road-wheel suspension on each side, making its mixed design heritage immediately apparent to knowledgeable observers.
