StuH 42 Ausf. G

Bring late-war German armoured support to your collection with this detailed StuH 42 Ausf. G model. Developed from the proven Sturmgeschütz III chassis, the Sturmhaubitze combined a low silhouette with a powerful 10.5 cm howitzer. Its SPECIAL WEAPONS badge recognises its specialised role as a Sturmgeschütz-based assault howitzer designed to deliver close infantry support.

Historical Role

The StuH 42 served with Wehrmacht Sturmgeschütz units during the Second World War. While later StuG III variants increasingly engaged enemy armour, the StuH 42 concentrated on the original assault-gun mission: supporting infantry with high-explosive fire against field positions, buildings, strongpoints and other defended targets. Its heavier projectile gave German assault-gun formations a useful direct-fire capability during offensive and defensive operations.

Distinctive Appearance

The vehicle retained the compact, turretless profile of the StuG III Ausf. G, with its fixed superstructure, sharply angled armour and low fighting compartment. Its most distinctive feature is the short, broad 10.5 cm weapon, which gives the StuH 42 a noticeably heavier and more purposeful appearance than long-barrelled StuG III vehicles. The substantial gun mounting and closely packed superstructure make it immediately recognisable.

Variant Differences

The StuH 42 was developed from the StuG III, particularly the Ausf. G production form, but replaced the 7.5 cm gun with a 10.5 cm StuH 42 howitzer derived from the leFH 18 family. The most visible modelling difference is its shorter, larger-calibre barrel, while the underlying chassis and turretless layout remained familiar. This variant existed to provide stronger high-explosive support for infantry and assault-gun formations.

Modelling Uses

An excellent choice for late-war dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the StuH 42 suits urban ruins, defensive lines, woodland roads, repair scenes and armoured columns. Multiple scale options allow it to work equally well as a compact scenic vehicle or a highly visible display centrepiece.

Fun Fact

Although it closely resembled a StuG III, the StuH 42 was named for its howitzer armament: “StuH” is an abbreviation of Sturmhaubitze, meaning “assault howitzer.”
