Sturmgeschütz III Ausf. G

Historical Role
Originally conceived as mobile assault artillery, the Sturmgeschütz III supported infantry by engaging fortified positions, strongpoints and enemy weapons. As the war progressed, its role increasingly included anti-tank operations. The Ausf. G’s long-barrelled 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/48 made it a capable tank destroyer, while its lower cost and simpler construction compared with turreted tanks encouraged widespread Wehrmacht use.
Distinctive Appearance
The Ausf. G is defined by its low casemate superstructure, long gun barrel and compact Panzer III running gear. Recognisable details include the raised commander’s cupola, widened upper fighting compartment and roof-mounted machine gun position. Depending on production period and field configuration, vehicles could also carry Schürzen side skirts, spare track links and either a box-shaped gun mantlet or the rounded cast Saukopfblende.
Variant Differences
Developed from the Panzer III chassis and earlier StuG III assault-gun marks, the Ausf. G represented the principal final production variant. Its enlarged fighting compartment, revised roof and commander’s cupola distinguish it visually, while the long 7.5 cm gun provided substantially improved anti-armour capability compared with early short-barrelled versions. These changes reflected the growing need for an effective, economical armoured fighting vehicle able to undertake both assault-gun and anti-tank duties.
