Sturmpanzer IV Brummbär – SPECIAL WEAPONS
Bring the formidable silhouette of the German Sturmpanzer IV “Brummbär” to your collection with this detailed 3D-printed model. Built on the Panzer IV chassis, this heavily armoured assault vehicle carried a powerful 15 cm infantry-support howitzer, earning its place in our SPECIAL WEAPONS range.
Historical Role
Developed for the Wehrmacht during World War II, the Sturmpanzer IV was intended to support infantry during attacks on fortified positions and defended urban areas. Its short-barrelled 15 cm howitzer delivered heavy high-explosive shells against bunkers, buildings and strongpoints. Substantial frontal armour helped protect the crew while operating close to enemy defensive lines.
Distinctive Appearance
The Brummbär is immediately recognisable by its tall, slab-sided armoured superstructure and large gun mantlet. Its thick frontal plate, compact fighting compartment and short, broad howitzer barrel create a purposeful, front-heavy profile. The familiar Panzer IV running gear beneath the bulky casemate makes its origins clear while giving the vehicle a distinctive assault-gun appearance.
Variant Differences
The Sturmpanzer IV developed from the Panzer IV chassis but replaced the rotating tank turret with a fixed, heavily armoured superstructure. Its principal armament was a 15 cm StuH 43-series infantry-support howitzer rather than the longer anti-armour gun fitted to standard Panzer IV tanks. This conversion produced a specialised vehicle designed to engage fortifications and support close-range infantry assaults.
Modelling Uses
An excellent centrepiece for late-war German dioramas, urban battle scenes and fortified-position displays, the Brummbär also suits model railways, wargaming displays and specialist vehicle collections. The range of scales allows it to complement railway layouts, tabletop forces or larger showcase builds for collectors.
Fun Fact
The name “Brummbär,” often translated as “grouch” or “grumbler,” became the vehicle’s best-known nickname, although German wartime terminology generally referred to it simply as the Sturmpanzer.
