Sturmtiger V2
The Sturmtiger V2 is a highly detailed 3D-printed representation of Germany’s formidable late-war Sturmmörser assault vehicle. Combining the proven chassis of the Tiger I with an imposing armoured superstructure and massive rocket-assisted mortar, this unusual vehicle makes a striking centrepiece for World War II collections, battlefield scenes and scale displays.
Historical Role
Officially designated Sturmmörserwagen 606/4 mit 38 cm RW 61, the Sturmtiger was developed to support Wehrmacht infantry during assaults on fortified positions and heavily defended urban areas. Its 38 cm Raketen-Werfer 61 could deliver an exceptionally powerful projectile against bunkers, strongpoints and buildings. Introduced late in the war, it was a specialised assault vehicle rather than a conventional Panzer intended for tank-versus-tank combat.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its tall, sharply angled casemate, thick frontal armour and remarkably large, short mortar barrel. The familiar Tiger I suspension and broad tracks remain visible beneath the superstructure. Other characteristic details include the circular muzzle openings, roof fittings and the external loading crane used to handle the Sturmtiger’s extremely heavy ammunition.
Variant Differences
Developed from the Tiger I heavy tank, the Sturmtiger replaced the rotating turret and tank gun with a fixed, heavily armoured fighting compartment housing the 38 cm mortar. Its raised casemate, oversized barrel and rear-mounted loading equipment create a dramatically different silhouette. The conversion existed to provide close-range demolition firepower against fortifications and urban strongpoints.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for late-war German dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the Sturmtiger suits ruined-city scenes, defensive positions, maintenance settings and heavy-armour line-ups. Its distinctive profile provides an unmistakable focal point in any World War II display.
Fun Fact
The Raketen-Werfer 61 was derived from a naval weapon concept, making the Sturmtiger’s main armament particularly unusual among German armoured fighting vehicles.
