SU-100 Soviet Tank Destroyer
Bring a powerful late-war Red Army armoured vehicle to your collection with this detailed SU-100 model. Combining the proven mobility of the T-34 chassis with a formidable 100 mm gun, the SU-100 became one of the Soviet Union’s most capable self-propelled anti-tank weapons of World War II.
Historical Role
Introduced during the final phase of the war, the SU-100 was designed to engage heavily armoured German vehicles on the Eastern Front. Its D-10S gun provided greater anti-armour capability than earlier Soviet self-propelled guns. SU-100 units supported armoured advances, reinforced defensive positions and used ambush tactics to engage enemy tanks from advantageous firing positions.
Distinctive Appearance
The SU-100 is recognised by its low, angular casemate superstructure, sharply sloped frontal armour and long gun barrel projecting well beyond the hull. Its T-34-derived running gear, five large road wheels on each side and rear-mounted engine deck give it a familiar Soviet silhouette. A prominent commander’s cupola on the right side of the fighting compartment further distinguishes it from earlier vehicles.
Variant Differences
Developed from the SU-85, itself based on the T-34 chassis, the SU-100 retained broadly similar automotive components but replaced the 85 mm armament with the more powerful 100 mm D-10S gun. Its revised casemate featured improved frontal protection and a commander’s cupola, while the longer barrel created a noticeably more imposing profile. The variant was introduced to counter increasingly well-protected enemy armour.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for late-war Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, tabletop wargaming displays and collectors of Soviet armoured vehicles. It can be displayed in an ambush position, advancing with Red Army infantry or grouped with T-34s and other self-propelled artillery.
Fun Fact
The SU-100’s D-10 gun belonged to the same successful weapon family later adapted for the T-54 and T-55 tanks, giving its armament a legacy extending far beyond World War II.
