SU-100Y Soviet Heavy Self-Propelled Gun – RARE VARIANT
Recreate one of the Soviet Union’s most unusual World War II armoured vehicles with this detailed SU-100Y resin model. Conceived as a heavily armed self-propelled gun, the SU-100Y combined an imposing tracked chassis with a large fixed fighting compartment and powerful naval-derived armament. This model receives the RARE VARIANT badge because only a single SU-100Y prototype was built.
Historical Role
The SU-100Y was developed in 1940 as a heavy self-propelled gun intended to engage fortified positions, bunkers and other hardened battlefield targets. Its design reflected Red Army experience against strong defensive works during the Winter War. Rather than operating as a conventional turreted tank, it was conceived as a mobile artillery platform capable of bringing a large-calibre weapon into direct-fire range.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its tall, slab-sided superstructure, sharply defined armour plates and exceptionally long gun barrel. Its broad T-100 running gear, multiple road wheels and substantial hull give it a powerful early-war Soviet silhouette. The angular casemate and naval-style 130 mm gun make the SU-100Y visually distinct from later, lower-profile Soviet self-propelled guns.
Variant Differences
The SU-100Y was developed from the experimental T-100 heavy tank chassis. It retained the base vehicle’s tracked running gear but replaced the T-100’s turreted arrangement with a large fixed superstructure mounting a 130 mm B-13 gun. These changes created a specialised assault gun intended to defeat fortifications, with the casemate and long barrel providing its most obvious modelling differences.
Modelling Uses
An excellent centrepiece for Eastern Front prototype collections, historical dioramas and wargaming displays, the SU-100Y also offers an unusual addition to model railways featuring military loads, depots or museum scenes. Its singular history and striking profile make it especially appealing to collectors of Soviet experimental armour.
Fun Fact
The SU-100Y’s 130 mm B-13 weapon originated as a naval gun, linking this formidable armoured prototype to artillery also associated with Soviet warships and coastal defence.
