SU-122 Soviet Self-Propelled Assault Gun
Bring powerful Red Army armoured support to your collection with this detailed SU-122 3D-printed model. Developed during the Second World War, the SU-122 combined the proven mobility of the T-34 chassis with a heavy 122 mm howitzer, creating a compact self-propelled assault gun suited to the demanding conditions of the Eastern Front.
Historical Role
The SU-122 entered Red Army service in 1943 as a mobile fire-support vehicle. Its primary task was to accompany Soviet armoured and infantry formations, using high-explosive shells against field fortifications, anti-tank positions, buildings and other defended targets. Although it could engage enemy armour when required, it was designed chiefly as an assault gun rather than a dedicated tank destroyer.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its low, turretless silhouette and sharply sloped enclosed fighting compartment. A short, thick 122 mm gun barrel projects through a substantial front mounting, while the broad tracks, five large road wheels on each side and sloping lower hull reveal its T-34 heritage. Roof hatches, vision devices and angular armour surfaces add characteristic wartime Soviet detail.
Variant Differences
The SU-122 was developed from the T-34 medium tank, retaining its chassis, suspension, engine arrangement and running gear. The rotating tank turret and 76 mm gun were replaced by a fixed armoured superstructure carrying an adapted M-30 122 mm howitzer. This provided heavier explosive firepower and greater internal space for the gun crew, while producing the variant’s distinctive casemate profile.
Modelling Uses
An excellent choice for Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the SU-122 works particularly well in scenes featuring infantry support, ruined urban areas, fortified positions, winter roads or advancing Soviet armoured columns.
Fun Fact
The designation “SU” comes from the Soviet term Samokhodnaya Ustanovka, meaning “self-propelled installation,” while “122” refers to the gun’s calibre.
