SU-152
Bring formidable Soviet heavy artillery power to your collection with this detailed SU-152 model. Introduced in 1943, the SU-152 combined the proven running gear of a heavy tank with a powerful gun-howitzer housed in a fixed armoured superstructure, creating one of the Red Army’s most imposing self-propelled guns of the Second World War.
Historical Role
The SU-152 was designed primarily as a heavy assault gun for supporting Red Army advances on the Eastern Front. Its 152 mm ML-20S gun-howitzer could engage bunkers, fortified positions, buildings and field defences with powerful high-explosive ammunition. Although not originally conceived as a dedicated tank destroyer, its heavy projectiles also proved capable of disabling or destroying heavily armoured enemy vehicles.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its tall, angular casemate, broad KV-pattern tracks and six large road wheels on each side. A substantial gun mantlet surrounds the projecting 152 mm weapon, while the prominent muzzle brake, sloping frontal armour and compact fighting compartment give the SU-152 a rugged, purposeful silhouette.
Variant Differences
The SU-152 was developed on the chassis and running gear of the KV-1S heavy tank. In place of the KV-1S rotating turret, it used a fixed armoured superstructure carrying the much larger ML-20S gun-howitzer. This arrangement provided the space and strength required for heavy direct-fire artillery, with the altered upper hull and oversized gun installation forming the principal visible modelling differences.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, the SU-152 can form the centrepiece of an assault on fortified positions, an armoured column or a battlefield maintenance scene. The range of scales also makes it suitable for model railways, wargaming displays and collectors building historically themed Soviet vehicle line-ups.
Fun Fact
During development, the vehicle was known as the KV-14. It was redesignated SU-152 when accepted for Red Army service, with “SU” derived from the Soviet term for self-propelled mounting.
