SU-5-2 122mm T-26 SPG – RARE VARIANT

Add an unusual piece of Soviet armoured artillery development to your collection with the SU-5-2 122mm T-26 SPG. Based on the widely used T-26 light tank chassis, this limited experimental self-propelled howitzer combined tracked mobility with substantial artillery firepower. Its uncommon configuration and distinctive open fighting compartment make it an excellent choice for specialist Red Army collections.

Historical Role

The SU-5-2 was developed during the Soviet pre-war drive to provide artillery units with mobile, tracked fire support. Armed with a 122mm howitzer, it was intended to deliver indirect fire against field positions, infantry concentrations and defensive works while keeping pace with mechanised formations. Although associated with the development of Soviet self-propelled artillery that would become increasingly important during the Second World War, the SU-5-2 remained a limited experimental vehicle.

Distinctive Appearance

The model is immediately recognisable by its compact T-26-derived running gear, centrally positioned enclosed superstructure and exposed rear fighting platform. The large 122mm howitzer dominates the vehicle, while the open crew area, angular armour plates and artillery equipment create a markedly different silhouette from the turreted T-26 tank.

Variant Differences

The SU-5-2 developed from the T-26 light tank chassis but replaced the tank’s rotating turret and standard armament with a reorganised hull layout and a rear-mounted 122mm M1910/30 howitzer installation. Its open artillery compartment and prominent gun assembly are the clearest modelling differences. The conversion existed to test a mobile howitzer capable of supporting Soviet mechanised forces.

Modelling Uses

This rare variant is ideal for early-war Soviet dioramas, experimental vehicle line-ups, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors of unusual armoured fighting vehicles. It also provides an effective visual contrast beside standard T-26 tanks and later Red Army self-propelled guns.

Fun Fact

The SU-5-2 formed part of the SU-5 “small triplex” concept, which explored fitting different artillery weapons to a common modified T-26 chassis.
