SU-76

The SU-76 was a Soviet self-propelled gun that combined a light tracked chassis with the proven 76.2 mm ZiS-3 divisional gun. Produced in large numbers during the Second World War, it provided Red Army formations with mobile fire support in a compact and practical vehicle. This detailed model captures the purposeful character of one of the Eastern Front’s most recognisable light self-propelled guns.

Historical Role

Introduced during the middle years of the war, the SU-76 was primarily used to support infantry with direct and indirect fire. Its gun could engage field fortifications, machine-gun positions, buildings and lighter armoured vehicles. The vehicle’s mobility allowed it to accompany advancing troops across terrain where conventional towed artillery could be difficult to reposition. Although lightly protected, it remained an important support vehicle through the Red Army’s later offensives.

Distinctive Appearance

The SU-76 is instantly identifiable by its low hull, narrow tracks and open-topped fighting compartment at the rear. Its long gun barrel projects from a simple angular shield, while the exposed upper compartment gives the vehicle a very different silhouette from a fully enclosed tank. Road wheels derived from Soviet light-tank practice and compact hull proportions add further visual interest.

Variant Differences

The SU-76 was developed from the T-70 light tank chassis, which was lengthened and adapted with an additional road wheel to carry a rear-mounted ZiS-3 gun installation. Unlike the turreted T-70, it used a fixed, open fighting compartment that provided more room for the gun crew and ammunition. The conversion created a mobile artillery platform suited to close infantry support.

Modelling Uses

This model is ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, tabletop wargaming displays and collectors of Soviet wartime vehicles. It can represent infantry support columns, artillery positions, urban fighting scenes or vehicles advancing along rough rural roads.

Fun Fact

Soviet troops nicknamed the SU-76 “Columbine,” a reference that reflected the vehicle’s relatively light and open character compared with heavier armoured fighting vehicles.
