SU-76I
Bring an unusual Eastern Front conversion to your collection with the Soviet SU-76I self-propelled gun. Combining captured German engineering with a purpose-built Soviet fighting compartment and armament, this distinctive vehicle reflects the Red Army’s practical use of available wartime equipment. It carries our LIMITED PRODUCTION badge because it was created from captured Panzer III and StuG III chassis converted for Soviet service.
Historical Role
Introduced during World War II, the SU-76I served as an enclosed self-propelled gun for direct-fire support. Its 76.2 mm gun could engage field fortifications, infantry positions and armoured vehicles, giving Red Army units a useful support weapon. The conversion helped supplement Soviet self-propelled artillery while making effective use of captured enemy chassis.
Distinctive Appearance
The SU-76I is immediately recognisable as a hybrid design. Its German Panzer III-pattern suspension, road wheels and lower hull contrast with the angular Soviet-built casemate above. A prominent rounded gun mantlet, sloping armour plates and fully enclosed fighting compartment give it a markedly different profile from both the original German vehicles and other Soviet SU-76 designs.
Variant Differences
Rather than being developed from the standard Soviet SU-76, the SU-76I was based on captured Panzer III tank and StuG III assault-gun chassis. The original turret or superstructure was removed and replaced by a fixed Soviet armoured casemate mounting a Soviet 76.2 mm gun. The conversion retained the recognisable German running gear while providing a vehicle suited to Red Army ammunition, crews and battlefield requirements.
Modelling Uses
This model is ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, captured-equipment scenes and workshop or repair-yard settings. It also makes an unusual addition to model railways, wargaming displays and collections focused on Soviet armour. Its mixed German and Soviet design features create a compelling painting and weathering subject for collectors at every scale.
Fun Fact
The “I” in SU-76I is commonly associated with the Russian word inostrannaya, meaning “foreign”, a direct reference to the vehicle’s captured German origins.
