SU-76M Soviet Self-Propelled Gun
Bring a widely used Red Army self-propelled gun to your collection with this detailed SU-76M model. Combining a light tracked chassis with the proven 76.2 mm ZiS-3 gun, the SU-76M became an important source of mobile fire support during the later years of World War II.
Historical Role
Introduced in 1943, the SU-76M served extensively on the Eastern Front as an infantry-support and light self-propelled artillery vehicle. Its gun could engage field fortifications, machine-gun positions, infantry and lightly armoured vehicles, while also providing indirect fire when required. The vehicle’s relatively low weight and mobility made it useful in terrain where heavier Soviet assault guns and tanks could struggle.
Distinctive Appearance
The SU-76M is immediately recognisable by its compact tracked chassis, forward driving compartment and tall, open-topped fighting compartment at the rear. Its long gun barrel projects from a broad angular shield, while the exposed upper and rear sections give the vehicle a purposeful, lightly protected silhouette. Road wheels derived from the T-70 light tank further emphasise its characteristic Soviet wartime profile.
Variant Differences
The SU-76M was developed from the original SU-76, itself based on an enlarged T-70 chassis. It retained the ZiS-3 gun but introduced a revised powertrain arrangement to address serious transmission and reliability problems. The enclosed roof over the fighting compartment was also removed, improving crew access, ventilation and gun operation; this open superstructure is the most visible modelling difference.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, military model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the SU-76M suits scenes featuring infantry advances, artillery positions, urban fighting or late-war Soviet armoured columns. Multiple scales allow it to complement compact layouts, tabletop forces and highly detailed display collections.
Fun Fact
The SU-76 family became one of the most numerous Soviet armoured fighting vehicle types of World War II, exceeded in production only by the T-34 family.
