SU-85 Soviet Self-Propelled Gun
Bring an important Red Army armoured fighting vehicle to your collection with this detailed SU-85 model. Introduced during World War II, the SU-85 combined the proven mobility of the T-34 chassis with a powerful 85 mm gun in a compact, turretless fighting compartment. It is an excellent choice for recreating Soviet armoured formations and Eastern Front scenes from 1943 onward.
Historical Role
The SU-85 was developed to provide Soviet units with greater anti-tank firepower against increasingly well-armoured German vehicles. Serving primarily as a self-propelled anti-tank gun, it engaged enemy armour from prepared positions or supported advancing Red Army formations with direct fire. Its improved weapon gave Soviet crews greater reach and armour penetration than the contemporary 76.2 mm-armed T-34.
Distinctive Appearance
The vehicle is immediately recognisable by its low, angular casemate, long gun barrel and sloping frontal armour. With no rotating turret, the main gun projected directly from the superstructure, while the running gear, broad tracks and Christie-style road wheels retained the familiar appearance of the T-34 family. Roof fittings, crew hatches and the prominent gun mantlet add further visual interest.
Variant Differences
Developed on the T-34 medium tank chassis, the SU-85 retained much of its base vehicle’s automotive layout but replaced the rotating turret with a fixed armoured casemate. Its principal armament was the 85 mm D-5S gun, aimed by turning the vehicle for major changes in direction. The design provided stronger anti-tank capability while established T-34 production and components supported practical wartime manufacture.
Modelling Uses
Ideal for Eastern Front dioramas, model railways, wargaming displays and collectors, the SU-85 can represent an advancing armoured column, a concealed anti-tank position, a workshop scene or a weathered vehicle operating across muddy and winter terrain.
Fun Fact
The designation “SU” derives from the Soviet term for self-propelled installation, while “85” refers to the calibre of its main gun. The SU-85’s service helped bridge the firepower gap before the wider arrival of the T-34-85.
